Facebook Timeline

While you’re feeling your way around with Timeline if you’re a Page Admin you still need to make sure you’re page is looking good, that it is managed well and you’re not overlooking anything requiring immediate attention.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a snapshot of some of the changes a Page Admin needs to get familiar with very quickly.

Facebook Timeline – Must Knows for Page Admins

1. Timeline Cover Image
The new ‘Cover Photo’ is the image placed at the top of your page and it’s a real opportunity to promote your brand.  Check out https://www.facebook.com/Jaguar as an example.

You may update this cover shot as often as you desire. However, you do need to be aware the new cover photo comes with very strict rules from Facebook.  You cannot have the following on your cover shot:

a) Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website.”

b) Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.

c) References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.

d) Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”

2. Profile Picture
This should really be your logo and therefore remain static.  Your profile picture will feature alongside posts in the user’s newsfeed. Make sure it will stand out – so minimise text.

3. Promote a Post with Pinning
If you have a post that you’d like to keep in prominent display on your page, you can now do that for up to 7 days with the new ‘Pin to Top’ option.  Just right-click on the post and the Star and Pen icon will come up, choose ‘Pin to Top’ from the drop down menu under the Pen and that post will stay at the top of your page for the next 7 days.  A little orange ribbon is displayed on the top right of your post confirming the completed the action.

4. Highlight a Post
You can now have a post fill the full width of your Timeline.  All you need to do is right-click the post and select the Star icon.  That’s it!

5. Notifications
At the top right-hand side of your page, you will see a small box named ‘Admin Panel’ with a number highlighted in bold red indicating recent Fan activity on you page.  Click the ‘Admin Panel’ button and you’ll then see on the left-hand side of your page recent comments and likes posted by Fans, to the right side of the page highlighted in bold red is any private messages you’ve received.

6. Comments from Fans
With the move to Timeline, comments on your page from Fans are not as prominent as they were before…there is good and bad with this new change.   Comments are now located on the right-hand side of your Timeline page under the white box labelled ‘X Friends’ (mutual number of friends who like your page) in the box called ‘Recent posts by others.’
Tip: Keep an eye on your notifications to make sure you’re not missing feedback or questions from your fans.

So, that’s it, you now have the basics to keep your page updated and engaging while you’re learning to fall in love (or come to terms with) the new Facebook Timeline.
