Google My Business Profile

For a little background to this

At the beginning of 2022, Google announced it was replacing “Google My Business” with “Google Business Profile” stating it as an updated way for local businesses to manage their local listing.

Then on the 4th April, Google announced that the “Google My Business” app has been replaced and users will now manage their profile through the Google Maps and Google Search apps.

In a nutshell, Google is saying it prefers businesses with single listings to manage their businesses in Search or Maps and not in the old Google My Business console.

Worth knowing is, this is just another change as before Google My Business Profile was known as Google My Business, Google Places, Google+ and Google Local.  As with everything in the world of online, there is always change!

For those businesses who have not created a business profile to date (why haven’t you?) now is the time to get it done as having a profile on Google helps with search ranking.

Updating Your Profile – The Key Points

When updating your profile on Maps/Search there are 3 critical actions that you need to take when updating your business profile.

  1. Edit your profile information
  2. Promote your business with posts and photos
  3. Connect with customers by responding to reviews and questions

Your Primary Category Is Key

One of the most important pieces of information on your profile is your business category, in particular the primary category.  Make sure to have that completed and be specific.

Google has a list of business categories, so go through them and be as specific as you can.  Remember, when a user puts a search term into Google, they will specific exactly what they want. No one puts into Google ‘local shop’ they will put in ‘shop selling X.’  That ‘X’ is key to your business being found.

And lastly, Google has released a video to walk you through the process.
