It's often said, if you rise your head above other

It's often said, if you rise your head above others, be it family or peers, that you need to prepare yourself for the fact that some won't like it.

In a family environment it can be choosing a life that different to how you were brought up, or in a work environment, it could be getting a promotion above your friends and colleagues.

Sometimes those who are left behind can react badly by sniping away at your successes and downplaying your wins. We call it in Ireland, "Keeping you in your place." Some are acting out of envy while others will act out of fear of losing the person they once knew. Either way, you need to accept that not everyone in life will support your success and be prepared to rise above it, stay focused and stay strong.

Has it crossed your mind then that you may be putting your company at risk with an impending legal action?

In a recent case taken by French citizen, ‘Monsieur T’ to the European Convention on Human Rights, a Labour Court decision dismissing Monsieur’s demand for reinstatement at Cubik was overruled.

The court agreed that Monsieur T had no obligation to attend retreats and Friday drinks organised by the company. And his employer’s expectation that he joins in was violating his freedom of expression.

This is now being seen in France as a win for workplace dignity and “the right not to have fun.”

I have no doubt we will see the same from employees in Ireland and the UK and in particular with our Gen Z employees.
